Worms

"Worms is a strategy game with a difference... it appeals to the dark side of human nature. Basically you control your four worms and are at war with up to 3 other teams. You must try and use the weapons at your disposal in the best possible way - or at least to the most devastating effect."  (Readme.1st)

"Worms also differs in that it doesn`t take long before people start feeling very close to their little pink chums - you start to feel for them as they are blown away and you very soon start to exact revenge on rival teams at any attempt to kill your beloved team." (Readme.1st)

"Worms is a game that you simply must play - the PC has been party to many visually stunning, yet unsatisfying genres over the last 2 or 3 years. Here is a game that reeks of gameplay - we hope that you`ll spend a little time getting to know it and that by the time the much more enhanced and option laiden full game comes out, that you`ll be absolutely itching for more." (Readme.1st)

The description in the Worms demo Readme.1st file is accurate and Worms is truly an addictive game.  The demo does not have all the capabilities of the full version but it is none the less extremely playable.  Each person controls a team of four worms which all have a specified number of "health points."  Your objective is to kill all your friend's worms.

When it is your turn, you can move about and jump over obstacles to get the best possible shot.  However there are many obstacles and land mines which prevent you from going very far.  You then choose a weapon, these are some of your choices in the demo: Bazooka, Homing Missile, Shotgun, Uzi, Grenade, Cluster Bomb, Dragon Punch, Fireball, Dynamite, Mine and Airstrike.

Remember, you only have a limited number of Homing Missiles, Cluster Bombs, Dynamite, Mines, and Airstrikes.  Therefore you must plan you attacks carefully.  This wide array of weapons make this game very interesting.  My favorites are the Cluster Bomb and Shotgun.  You can aim and time the cluster bombs to explode above an enemy worm which makes for a devestating attack when you've used up all the precision weapons.  The Shotgun allows you to shoot twice.  It's great for pushing people into the abyss or shooting mines into someone. (Mines do not go off in explosions, instead they get thrown up in the air and land somewhere else)  Another nice weapon is the dynamite.  You can just drop it next to your opponent and run away.  It will take at least 70 damage off a 100 health worm and hurt any others in the vicinity.

Of course you can teleport and dig tunnels into the landscape to protect yourself from incoming fire.  The possibilities are limitless in this game demo and well worth its download time.  The compressed demo is only about 1.5 MB, so you can't go wrong downloading it.

The graphics in this game are plain and ressemble Lemmings, but this is infitely better.  Team17 claims in its Readme.1st files that gameplay is above all the most important thing in a game and that is true.  In addition, this game should run on just about any PC since its system requirements are so low.  Since this demo is of an unfinished game, there are a couple minor caveats.  The computer AI is virtually unbeatable, but who cares?  We don't play against the computer... we prefer bashing out friends and laughing when they die.  The graphics, music, and SFX are mediocre but is that really important?  Sure it would be nicer to have SVGA graphics, but even so, Worms is great!

Trust me, this game is awesome. Download it.

"Worms is meant to be fun. It`s one of the best games we (as a software company) have ever played, we`ve been playing it for over a year and still love it... we hope you will too!"  (Readme.1st)

P.S.  I may sound like an advertisement. But I am in no way related to Team17.  Hell, I never knew they existed until someone showed it to me in class :-)
